The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the clinical microbiology laboratories at different levels. The increasing number of processed-samples, the limited temporary availability of molecular reagents and the request of a quickly diagnostic response have posed the need of different molecular platforms to overcome these limitations. Indeed, since the first months of 2020, diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection requested the development, implementation and validation of novel diagnostic tests, such as the rapidly modifications of the molecular diagnostic workflows in clinical laboratory. In this context, the implementation of the high-throughput automation system represents a fundamental tool, in both pre-analytical and analytical phases, to improve molecular workflow and simplify the diagnostic process. In this session, we report our experience in a single center for the implementation of a preanalytic automated system and its applicability in a routine workflow of a clinical microbiology laboratory for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
