Metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS) has been shown to be a valuable addition in microbial diagnostics, especially in cases with high suspicion of infection where laboratory analyses did not result in an etiological agent. Although diagnostic application of mNGS has been very challenging, the increased technological and bioinformatic possibilities raise the question whether mNGS will become a routine diagnostic tool in clinical microbiology, potentially replacing conventional methods. This session provides an update on the state-of-the-art of mNGS
