Several factors may lead to development of fungal infections during antifungal therapy or prophylaxis. Breakthrough fungal infections are challenging and frequently associated with poor clinical outcome. Among the major reasons that lead to development of these infections are inadequate serum levels of antifungal drugs, and antifungal resistance. The goal of this session is to focus on indications and significance of therapeutic drug monitoring and raise awareness of species-based primary antifungal resistance with respect to breakthrough fungal infections. This Meet-the-Expert Session as a whole serves to enlighten less known aspects of breakthrough fungal infections for rational management in clinical practice.
