Clinical microbiology laboratories worldwide in 2021 are facing more challenges than ever due to antibiotic resistance (AMR). The epidemiology of AMR and EUCAST guidance regarding interpretive breakpoints are important information for the laboratory and clinician. Equally important are the challenges faced by all laboratories—including those in resource-limited settings regarding the balance of diagnostics and stewardship. Routine antibiotic susceptibility testing and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) accuracy are needed to meet the clinical needs of all patients. There are new antibiotics in the development pipeline that will be of importance in the future
