Many undiagnosed viral hepatitis cases worldwide represent an important obstacle to the WHO objectives of viral hepatitis elimination by 2030. Technical advances in rapid diagnostic testing in HCV and HBV infections are likely to improve and simplify access to testing and to promote linkage to care and ultimately cure. Traditionally, rapid diagnostic testing algorithms included the use of immunoassays that detected antibodies or antigens and provided results within 30 minutes by using alternative sampling methods. Recent validation studies on rapid HCV RNA assays based on both standard and alternative sampling methods (finger-stick capillary whole blood) confirmed acceptable sensitivity and specificity of these assays. The main contribution of rapid molecular assays is the possibility to diagnose active infection with hepatitis viruses in a single visit enabling real-time treatment decision, potentially supporting elimination.
