"This session will highlight the “hidden hydra” of forgotten or missed infectious causes hiding under common neurological presentations. Laura Benjamin, stroke and HIV expert, (other interests: Covid and varicella zoster virus/ stroke), will outline current thinking on infection and stroke: when and what to test, what to do. Prof Vapalahti will use his considerable expertise in tick-borne encephalitis to update on this important infection, the roles of different virus subtypes and the range of neurological presentations. HTLV-1 is a globally under-recognised infection with important clinical implications. Mirna Biglione, ideally placed in Argentina where HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 co-exist, will describe acute neurological presentations in HTLV, and the important role of public health. Kiran Thakur has spent her career researching global infectious neurology. She will talk about Guillain barre syndrome and its common infectious triggers, in the context of current emerging infectious diseases and her interest in developing novel diagnostics.
