The new focus on malaria eradication was prompted by Melinda and Bill Gates in 2007, after decades when this goal had been simply abandoned and judged unfeasible. Considerable efforts have been made since by the funders as well as by the scientific and public health community, and malaria incidence has rapidly declined in the following years. This decline seems to have come to a stop in the past few years. Is eradication still a reasonable goal to propose, or is this utopia that risks to divert energies and funding from more reachable targets?
