With wave after wave of the pandemic, each with inherent potential for uncertain or unpredictable severity, COVID-19 has attained notoriety as a humbler of modern civilization, including its scientific and medical advances. The impact is worldwide, as COVID-19 has shown no respect for the level of development, but the extant human capacity and material resource challenges of LMICs, in particular the poor state of diagnostic and treatment capacities in many of the countries, makes them ultimately more vulnerable. The issue of excess mortality from the pandemic is more visible in this regard, and its reduction could be a veritable fulcrum for the promotion of containment countermeasures. This underscores the need for adaptable treatment benchmarks in addressing COVID-19 care challenges in LMICs. This workshop shall review the foundations of standards of care in the treatment of COVID-19, care challenges in LMICs, and adaptability of optimal standards in meeting regional needs.
